The Creation Process of the Invented in Utah 2010 Logo

‘Invented in Utah’ 2010 is a non-profit challenge that educates the inventors of Utah and connects them with the local businesses that serve them. The primary goal is to promote creativity and innovation in Utah and help people take their inventions from ideas to reality.

…When I got hired to do a re-branding make over for ‘iiU’ 2010, it was my challenge to create a logo that was equally inspiring and creative as the event itself.

This post shares my process of creating what came to be the final ‘Invented in Utah’ 2010 logo. It begins with quickies from my sketchbook, then digital mock-ups, and then once I found a direction I liked, I played around with it until it was just right. Here it is. Enjoy.

Red Card Button on Facebook

…I have come across multiple discussion boards where Facebook users are asking for a “dislike” button. It seems the “like” button just isn’t enough.

What if Facebook were to add Yellow Card and Red Card buttons?

…then, rather than simply “disliking” a photo, users could “card” a photo. The level they disapprove or dislike a photo would determine whether they use a YELLOW or RED card.

This idea came about while I was watching the World Cup 2010 Final match. The referee was handing out cards “like it was his job”.

It made me think: “What if everyone could give out yellow/red cards?”

The following is a mock-up of what I imagined:

What would be the result of receiving multiple yellow cards? Facebook suspension? Or would this just lead to more ankle grabbing foul play?

My New Wacom Bamboo Pen Tablet

I just opened my new Wacom Bamboo Pen Tablet. Below is my first “play time” with it.

With today’s design software and technology, many believe that a designer can get by without ever using a tablet. I wouldn’t disagree. However, for me personally, using a tablet puts the ART back into digital design. While speaking at Altitude Design Summit 2010, Erik Natzke said: “Designers, free-hand sketch every chance you get. Graphic Designers are becoming a dime a dozen and so it is that pure raw artistic talent that will set you apart.”

At my studio I have a 24″ Wacom tablet that I work on, but I wanted a tablet I could take with me on my travels and else where. The Wacom Bamboo Pen Tablet fits in my bag perfectly next to my lap top. Below is my first practice session on the new tablet.

What should I create next with it? Custom website? Logo? Let me know if you are interested and contact me today.

Website Makeover for Escapeseeker.net

HD TV series, Escapeseeker, just received a makeover for their site, escapeseeker.net.

I (Capital G Design) teamed up with Ryan Hightower (Tower Media Design) to take on such a large project. Even though we had been wanting to work together for quite some time, this was our first collaboration together.

• My experience working with Ryan Hightower: INSPIRING. Everything he touches is the highest of quality. I suggest taking a visit over to his website if you haven’t yet.

• My experience working with the Escapeseeker team: TROPICAL. I had the privilege of traveling with the show to French Polynesia as a photographer to capture content images for the new website. My experiences were absolutely prices. Escapeseeker offers opportunities to follow along on a Exclusive Escapeseeker Experience.
